Our Autumn Wedding

1930s style wedding in Skipton, North Yorkshire

Follow my blog with BloglovinIf you’re wondering why things have been very quiet over here for the last few months, that’s because I’ve been super busy planning my own wedding, which happened a few weeks ago in September. Some of my clients made me promise to share some pictures so here they are!

We held our wedding at Burnsall Village Hall in North Yorkshire, close to where I grew up. It was a total DIY job and we pulled in a lot of favours from friends and family for everything from dessert to decorations and hiring bar staff. It was hard work but completely worth it and I know it’s a cliché but it really was the best day of my life.

The main reason that this blog has been on the back burner was that I decided (on top of everything else) to make my own wedding dress from scratch. I’ve made my own clothes before and love sewing, although I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a speedy sewer. I knew it would be a big project so I began in January, thinking it would take me maybe until June but in fact I finished my dress three days before the wedding.  I was really chuffed with the result and although it was a mammoth project I’m glad I did it.

I made my veil too and my headpiece was an original 1930s piece chosen by my parents as a surprise. On the day I felt the most beautiful I’ve ever felt and at least I know no-one will ever have the same dress as me.

One thing people kept asking me in the run up to the big day was who would do my hair and makeup? I always knew I’d do my own makeup on my wedding day. Like a lot of people, I tend to stick to the same look most of the time (Max Factor mascara and MAC Lady Danger lipstick) and I didn’t want to look completely different on my wedding day. However, I did treat myself to a lovely new Velvet Matte Lip Pencil from NARS in Infatuated Red, which is a great Autumn berry/red colour. I’m glad I did my own makeup because it was the only time throughout the morning I didn’t feel nervous.

My hair was a different story – I have very little patience with styling my own hair so I turned to my friend Lois Pickup, who I’ve known and worked alongside for years. She created the most amazing 1930s hairstyle for me and also did beautiful makeup for my bridesmaids and mum.

I was lucky to have some really good advice over the years from my brides and that definitely helped when it came to my turn. I’m planning on writing a post very soon about my own experience with some tips I’d like to pass on now I’ve been there and done it.

We were lucky to have some fantastic wedding suppliers to help make our day perfect. Thank you to all the following people
